The "Kalachakra" can be translated in Vajrayana Buddhism as a gyre of time. It means the "time-cycles" and forms a Kalachakra system which includes three of such cycles. The three gyre of time are external, internal and alternative. The external and internal cycles relates with time whereas the alternative cycles include practices which helps in gaining liberation from external and internal ones. External cycle is the cyclical process that takes place in the universe including astronomical, cosmic and historical. The internal, on the other hand, relates to the physiological cycles of the body like birth, childhood, old age death, re-birth and so on. It is also associated with the mental and emotional cycles of an individual. These cycles are not controlled by any force but are determined by impulses of energy. These impulses are called the "winds of karma". The whole theory revolves around this force - Karma - which is deeply connected with the human mind. Kalachakra is an intricate system of teaching and practice in Tibetan Buddhism involving the journey to the spiritual self, theory of karma, human mind and soul, the external aspect and other related thoughts and ideas.
